The Story Behind Square Face Generator
In 2013, a small Flash application was published on Flash Museum. The tool let anyone assemble a pixel-art portrait from modular parts such as hair, eyes, mouth, glasses, hats, and clothes, all rendered in a clean, square-proportioned style. That tool quickly became one of the memorable avatar creators of its era.
For years, the generator lived as a native Flash application. Then in December 2020, Adobe officially ended Flash Player support and browsers removed Flash entirely. Like thousands of other Flash creations, the original app went dark overnight.
The original square.swf file survived, and Ruffle made it possible to run original Flash content again in modern browsers through Rust and WebAssembly. This site exists as a preservation project: no remake, no premium version, and no edits to the original Flash file. Just the same tool, accessible in your browser today.
